Hopefully we have turned a corner with the weather and we continue to have full classrooms through the month. It is a busy month for celebrations and important events, with Black History Month, Ramadan, Lunar New Year, Valentine's Day, Mardi Gras and the 100th day of school all coming up. On top of that we have out winter movie night coming up this Thursday (more info below) and Family Day next Monday.

Also this Friday, we will send home Term 1 Report Cards and Kindergarten Communications of Learning. This is an important opportunity to reflect with your child on their accomplishments and growth over the first half of the year and to set goals for second term. If you have any questions about your child's report card please reach out to their educators.

G. With Labour Day falling later than usual in 2026, the creation of a balanced and consistent calendar has presented more challenges than in typical years.

In collaboration with our coterminous boards—the Algonquin and Lakeshore Catholic District School Board and the Hastings and Prince Edward District School Board—we have prepared four calendar options for consideration. Please note that parents must stay with their children for this event to supervise. Doors will open at 5:30 - more info is below; the movie will be selected by students next week!

Ramadan

Ramadan is fast approaching and we would like to wish our Muslim students and families Ramadan Mubarak! Our school looks forward to supporting those who are observing fasting, and to honoring the cultural importance of Ramadan. We recognize the diverse religious backgrounds and values represented in our school community and the importance of being sensitive to the needs of all students and their families. We are committed to supporting your child, should they be fasting during Ramadan. As we recognize that the two daily nutrition breaks are likely the most difficult periods to endure while fasting, we would like to provide the option of an alternate quiet space for students to go to instead of their regular classrooms. The room will have books, magazines, games and other things to keep students busy. Of course, this will be a choice for students- they may remain in their regular classrooms. Please make sure your child's teacher knows if you would like them to access this alternate space.

Bus Cancellations

As we have seen several times already this year, sometimes buses are cancelled due to inclement weather. The decision to cancel buses is made by TriBoard, in consultation with the Limestone District School Board, early in the morning. This decision may be based on active weather in the morning, forecast weather for later in the day, or road conditions. When buses are cancelled in the morning they are cancelled for the full day. We will send an email to families in the morning when buses are cancelled, but you can also sign up for notifications at https://triboard.ca/snowdays/ . Please remember that if you drive your children to school on inclement weather days our supervision begins at 8:45 a.m. and students must be picked up by 3:30. If they are staying home due to weather or bus cancellations, please report the absence through SafeArrival to avoid an attendance call.

Possible School Time Change

We are considering a change to our school day for next year. This minor change would align us with our neighbouring schools, which would help resolve some shared staffing issues. The change would mean starting 5 minutes later (9:05) and ending 5 minutes earlier (3:25). It would not change the time students are in class, but would shorten each recess by 5 minutes. This would still be within Ministry Guidelines, and would increase our supervision abilities. We also find that the last 5 minutes of recess are when the majority of conflicts happen, so we would hope this change would reduce conflicts on the yard. This proposed change would not take effect until September, and must be approved by the Board. Any feedback on this proposal can be directed to Mr. Seiveright.

Lord Strathcona Daily Schedule – with proposed changes

<colgroup><col><col><col></colgroup>

<td class="editor-tableCell" style="width: 233.333px; The decision to cancel buses is made by TriBoard, in consultation with the Limestone District School Board, early in the morning.

<td class="editor-tableCell" style="width: 233.333px; Message to Families - February 11, 2026

Dear Families,

The Limestone District School Board is deeply saddened to learn of the horrific events that took place yesterday impacting a school and community in Tumbler Ridge, British Columbia.

No words can adequately express our condolences to those affected. Our hearts are with the students, families, and community members who have been directly impacted by this awful event. While there are many national and international events that affect people on a daily or weekly basis, events impacting schools have an impact on everyone attached to schools and education.

Significant events like these, that are in the public eye and heavily featured on news and social media, can have an impact on students and families in different ways. These impacts may look different for each person and be impacted by their source(s) of information and/or media coverage.

We are here to offer support. The board’s Educational Services team is available to support students and families as needed. Educational Services has prepared the following tips to help families support students during this time:

Recognize that students may become concerned that something bad will happen to themselves, family, or friends. Explain that safety measures are in place and reassure them that you and other adults will take care of them.

If your student is not focused on what happened, avoid dwelling on it or having detailed adult conversations in front of younger students. However, be available to answer questions to the best of your ability. Young students may not be able to express themselves verbally. Pay attention to changes in their behaviour or social interactions.

For some, limiting exposure to media coverage or other sources of information may be important, particularly when social media platforms contain significant amounts of misinformation or disinformation. Images of a horrific event can become overwhelming, especially if watched repetitively. Young students may not be able to distinguish between images on television or their screen, and their personal reality. For older students who choose to watch the news or scroll social media stories related to the event, be available to discuss what they see and to help put it into perspective.

Be aware of your own needs. Do not ignore your own feelings of anxiety and concern or anger. Talking to friends, family members, and mental health counsellors can help. You will be better able to support others if you can express your own emotions in a productive manner.

In addition, community supports and resources are available:

<a href="https://can01.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=http%3A%2F%2Ftrack.spe.schoolmessenger.com%2Ff%2Fa%2F5dtj2RpKyWZVMFip7eilAg~~%2FAAAAARA~%2FAhbXHyCLOOtfzcyagEZuGKPLbV5K-tlSWExqTmCL9-NVHVXd5eNYIKPxB8LGeEHouRZa2lvNZ1rO5TreJ7ri-UP7lxBJGi8V600JPmsZCBQkGsmS2uYlqi57IsFtWQki4gqwYIYAWuGuphCTy3wTmUSdDqaCRDgUxId5Uo6sZ2R_Gd8xfoLplCx5s2_bp68vOlgOv7CA2h3n9lyUcaj26A~~&data=05%7C02%7Cgrangea%40limestone.on.ca%7C1dd4b994643e4a1f80be08de698eb5e8%7Ce1f4165febae4d82a73ca0de593830be%7C0%7C0%7C639064258884292586%7CUnknown%7CTWFpbGZsb3d8eyJFbXB0eU1hcGkiOnRydWUsIlYiOiIwLjAuMDAwMCIsIlAiOiJXaW4zMiIsIkFOIjoiTWFpbCIsIldUIjoyfQ%3D%3D%7C0%7C%7C%7C&sdata=qfUtl3ogntDAI3yxWjmDmIvm79eSfhc0xUDxYtAllIk%3D&reserved=0" title="Original URL: http://track.spe.schoolmessenger.com/f/a/5dtj2RpKyWZVMFip7eilAg~~/AAAAARA~/AhbXHyCLOOtfzcyagEZuGKPLbV5K-tlSWExqTmCL9-NVHVXd5eNYIKPxB8LGeEHouRZa2lvNZ1rO5TreJ7ri-UP7lxBJGi8V600JPmsZCBQkGsmS2uYlqi57IsFtWQki4gqwYIYAWuGuphCTy3wTmUSdDqaCRDgUxId5Uo6sZ2R_Gd8xfoLplCx5s2_bp68vOlgOv7CA2h3n9lyUcaj26A~~.
